Current Assignments:

Here is a recap of what we've done after LIFT and what's coming up.

Math:
We've done Lesson 11 and 12.

Science:
Ch. 6 Sections 1-3 with notes for each section in Journals

Bible:
We are watching the Most Important Questions series and filling out a study guide that goes with it. The program archives can be found at www.miqteens.com if anyone is sick and needs to catch up on a program they miss at school.

Social Studies:
The European Countries "All Countries" test will be taken each day between now and the end of the quarter (Friday 10/22) until a student scores 100%. If they do not reach 100%, the score they get the last day will be recorded as their grade.

Writing:
The students are choosing one of the rough drafts they wrote this quarter to publish in the quarterly "Class Magazine".

The publishing steps and deadlines are listed below:

Steps to Publishing a Type 5 Piece of Writing

Step 1: Brainstorm possible writing topics and writing styles

Step 2: Write a Rough Draft

Step 3: Revise:

- Write 2 other possible titles

- Write 2 other possible beginnings.

- Write 2 other possible endings

- Find nouns/adjectives you can make more descriptive and specific

o The red truck = The fire engine red Ford F-150

- Find actions you can turn into step-by-step slow motion descriptions.

Step 4: Type a second draft and print it out

Step 5: Edit your printed draft

- Make paragraphs

- Look for sentences that should be split into more than one sentence

- Proper quotations for people talking

- Capitalize proper nouns

- Use an apostrophe for possessive words

- Make sure no words are left out of sentences.

- When a word is misspelled, make sure you choose the right word from the list of choices.

Step 6: Publish

- Create a cover page

- Put the title at the top of your writing

- Print out

Math:
Yesterday we did a test review, and today we did part one of the test. No homework.

Science:
Today was "Bridge Breaking" day. All groups completed the building requirements successfully. I will audit their financial records and compare their blueprints with the finished bridge and see how well they did in those departments.

Social Studies:
The "regional" test on the Countries of Europe will need to be completed by September 30th. This test requires them to correctly identify the countries one region at a time. It is done on Level 1 at:

The students will take the test each day between now and then, and the highest score they have by the 30th will be recorded in the gradebook.

The highest score for the whole continent of Europe, not just one region at a time, will be recorded by the end of the quarter.

Bible:
We have been practicing the skills of identifying lessons we can learn from a Bible passage about God and about ourselves. We are studying Matthew 24-28 right now.
A journal entry from yesterday and today will both be recorded in the gradebook. The journal entry needs to include a lesson from the passage about God, and a lesson about ourselves.

Writing Workshop:
Write three possible titles for your "action" story.
Make three new leads for your story. Write an attention grabbing first sentence and first paragraph by using each of the techniques we talked about in class:
1) Begin in the middle of a conversation.
2) Begin by describing action that is already happening.
3) Use a lot of 5 senses details and powerful adjectives to describe the opening scene.

This is due Monday for Advanced Bells and Tuesday for Beginning Bells.

Studied the skill of Prime Factorization.

LA:
Journal #5. Write a letter to yourself describing what you hope this school year will have been like when you look back at it at the end of the year. (Due Thurs.)

Reading:
Choose a service career. Write 2-3 paragraphs describing why or why not you would be interested in that career. (Due Thurs.)

Social Studies:
Begin learning the countries of Europe. The first test, knowing the countries by region, needs to be passed by the end of September. The web-site used to practice and test is: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/European_Geography.htm
The level tested is Level 1, under "Countries".

Writing Workshop:
"Describing Action" Type 3. Focus Correction Areas: 1) Uses a slow-motion description of their action. 2) The writing includes descriptive phrases from 3 of the 5 senses. 3) Capitalization at the end of each sentence, and proper punctuation at the end.
Describe an action filled experience you've had (accident, etc.) in at least a one page description.

No homework assignments today.

Math:
Finished phase 1 of assessment. Daily assignments will begin next week.

Science:
The students have begun work with their "Bridge Construction" companies on a toothpick bridge contest, where they will apply skills in collaboration with a team, problem-solving and physics principles to build a truss bridge to hold as much weight as possible.

Bible:
We practiced using the steps we have discussed this week of studying the Bible for personal devotions. Students received Bible credit for taking notes and participation.
The steps are:
1. Pray for the Holy Spirit to speak God's message for the day to you.
2. Read for pleasure, without measure.
3. Search for treasure.
4. Stop when you see it pop.
5. Pray and dig into the phrase/concept you stopped at.
6. Write down the phrase/concept that popped out to you, and the message God is giving you through that phrase/concept.
7. Write a note back to God in response to what He said to you through His word.

Next week we begin our Bible marking lesson on the "Great Controversy", and students need to have their Wide-Margin Bibles at school every day for class.

Journal #4 "Who Do You Want to Be Like When You're An Adult? Why?"

Reading:
Read "Days of Terror Chapter 1"
Draw a picture of the setting of the story. Include 3 details about the main character in your drawing, and include 4 details about the location of the chapter. On the back of your drawing, quote the words from the chapter where you got each detail that you added to your drawing.

Social Studies:
Your children should ask you two questions. They should write down the answers on paper, and both parent and student should sign the paper, saying they did it with you.
Q1: What countries are your ancestors from?
Q2: Write down a story that your family knows about one of your ancestors. (Go as far back in time as you can for your story.)

Introduction to "Toothpick Bridges" project

Math:
Started the beginning of the year assessment. This needs to be done at school.

Reading:
Introduced new book: "Days of Terror" about a boy in a persecuted Mennonite community during the Russian revolution.

Language Arts:
Created a list of 25 nouns, verbs, and adjectives to describe themselves. This will be put into a "Wordle". You can see what a Wordle is at the Corn Roast.

Due: Journal entry and "Wordle" list both due tomorrow, August 31.

Language Arts -
Journal entry #1: "What are your thoughts and feelings on the first day of school?"
(1/2 Page Double Spaced - the middle line hole of the paper)
Journal entry #2: "What is a friend? How do you become friends with someone? Can you be friendly without being friends? Explain." (10 Lines min.)


Note: Journal entries are what I call "Type 1" writing. The grade is based on the student putting in their "Reasonable Best Effort" and completing the minimum amount of writing. "Reasonable Best Effort" in a journal entry is defined as capitalization at the beginning and punctuation at the end of every sentence, the writing stays focused on answering the question that was asked, and the writing is neat and easily readable.

Upcoming Events:
The Cornroast is Tuesday, August 31st at 5:30pm. (Which also happens to be Sydney and Maegan's birthdays). The Cornroast is a meet-and-greet event where a meal of corn on the cob (roasted on a big grill), salad, and rolls is served at 5:30pm. Following the meal, each classroom has a meeting scheduled for parents to meet the with their child's teacher, who will discuss the school year and answer any questions you have.
